Foxford is
a picturesque, historic town about 15 minutes drive from both Ballina and
Castlebar. Located on the
famous River Moy close to the road bridge separating Lough Conn from
Lough Cullen, it is surrounded by spectacular scenery and is a local
centre for fisherman and a popular centre for tourists. The River Moy is considered one
of the best salmon fishing rivers left in the world and the Loughs
provide good fishing for brown trout. The Woollen Mills that are still operating also house
a Visitor’s Centre. The
Foxford Way provides almost 90km of marked trails that wind around the
town through the Ox Mountains, bog lands, loughs, rivers and
archaeological sites. As well
as local accommodation there are several hotels with excellent
restaurants at nearby Pontoon.
Admiral Brown, born in 1777 and the founder of the Argentinian Navy, is
arguably Foxford’s most famous son and he is being commemorated with a
purpose built memorial and museum adjacent to the Woollen Mills.
Recently, Foxford, always a busy bustling town, has
enjoyed substantial growth and expansion with the addition of several
major housing and building projects.
